TOP TEN EUROPEAN CLUBS RANKED BY AVERAGE ATTENDANCE OF THE 2016/2017 SEASON

Football is recognized as the most popular sport in the world. No wonder so many fans do not mind paying huge fees just to see their team play live.



And a big question is asked. What European clubs have the highest average attendance throughout a season? Soccerhubng have been able to compile a list of the top ten European clubs ranked by average attendance of the 2016/2017 season to answer the big question.

The list will be updated every summer. So stay tuned to check out if your team was able to make the cut for a particular season.

Here is the top ten for the 2016/2017 season below:

1.       BORUSSIA DORTMUND:
AVERAGE ATTENDANCE: 79,653
With a seat capacity of 81,360, the Signal Iduna Park is one of the largest stadiums in Europe. And the fans of Dortmund sure know how to make good use of the seat capacity with an average of 79,653 in attendance in the 2016/2017 season. Borussia Dortmund is often regarded as the best supported team in Europe due to their impressive attendance records.


2.       BARCELONA:
AVERAGE ATTENDANCE: 77,944
The Spanish giants make use of the Camp Nou which boasts as the largest stadium in Europe with a seating capacity of 99,354. But the fans of Barcelona don’t take full advantage of the large seating capacity, though, they recorded an average attendance of 77,944 in the 2016/2017 season alone, a lot more seats are still left empty.


3.       MANCHESTER UNITED:
AVERAGE ATTENDANCE: 75,289
Only if they knew, they would have built a larger seating capacity (than the current 75,643) for Old Trafford; the stadium used by Manchester United. With an average attendance of 75,289, it shows why they are often regarded as the next best supported team in Europe after Borussia Dortmund.


4.       BAYERN MUNICH:
AVERAGE ATTENDANCE: 75,000
Seems hard to believe but according to records registered by the German Giants, they boast of an average attendance of 75,000 which is exactly equal to the seating capacity of the Allianz Arena; the home of Bayern Munich. No wonder the stadium have been expanded several times already.


5.       REAL MADRID:
AVERAGE ATTENDANCE: 69,170
Given the history of a club like Real Madrid, it is expected that her home; the Santiago Bernabeu’s seating capacity of 81,044 will be filled to the brim but statistics states otherwise as they recorded an average attendance just shy off 70,000.


6.       SHALKE 04:
AVERAGE ATTENDANCE: 60,703
Despite finishing tenth in the Bundesliga last season, the German club continues to pull crowd into the Veltins Arena to come watch them live on every match day.


7.       ARSENAL:
AVERAGE ATTENDANCE: 59,956
The Emirates Stadium; the home of the Gunners have continued to a pull an average attendance that amounts to 99%+ of the original seating capacity of 60,432. And even if at the end, the fans are left disappointed at the end of the season, they still return back the next season to watch their team play live. Talk about loyal fans, the Gunners are the first in mind.


8.       WESTHAM:
AVERAGE ATTENDANCE: 56,970
Leaving their old stadium of over a decade and moving into their new 66,000 seating capacity stadium; the Olympic Stadium, the Hammers have recorded a major high for the 2016/2017 season. This statistics sees them as the newest comer into the top ten which proves why they left Upton Park for a more accommodating seating capacity.

     

9.       BENFICA:
AVERAGE ATTENDANCE: 55,994
A very dominant team in Portugal; not just on the field but also with their attendance on every match day as they usually pull a crowd with an excess 10,000+ higher than their rivals. They have picked up the Portuguese tittle for a fourth time in sucession and it won’t be farfetched to say that their fans that occupy their Estadio Da Luz stadium also deserve some credit.


10.   CELTIC:
AVERAGE ATTENDANCE: 55,882

To round up the top ten is the Scottish champions; Celtic who went through the season unbeaten both on home and away turf. No wonder they pulled fans regularly into their 60,411 seating capacity stadium; the Celtic Park.
