Last November saw a remarkable record created by Tottenham
in their match against Bayer Leverkusen with a total number of 85,512 fans
trooping in to Wembley Stadium to watch their respective teams play.
Here we look at top ten English teams that recorded the
highest attendance in all competitions.
1. TOTTENHAM
In a UEFA Champions League Group game between Tottenham and Bayer
Leverkusen on the 2nd of
November, 2016, a record was set by the North London club for the highest attendance for an English Club in
all competitions with a recorded 85,512
fans trooping into the Wembley Stadium
to watch their teams play.
2. MANCHESTER CITY
Long term record holders, recorded a total number of 84,569 fans in
attendance to witness the FA Cup match held between Manchester City and Stoke City on the 3rd of March, 1934. They are also currently recorded as
the highest record crowd for an English club ground for a domestic game. Maine Road was the name of the ground
used for the game.
3. MANCHESTER UNITED
Also using Maine Road for a league game due to damages sustained at Old
Trafford resulting from the Second World War, Manchester United recorded a total number of 83,260 in attendance in a match against Arsenal on the 17th
of January, 1948.
4. CHELSEA
In another league game between Chelsea
and visiting Arsenal, 82,905 fans
were present to watch both sides play on the 12th of October, 1935 at Stamford Bridge.
5. EVERTON
On the 18th of
September, 1948, a record high of 78,229
was in attendance for an Everton game
against Liverpool at Goodison Park in a league game.
6. ASTON VILLA
A first leg of an FA Cup game between Aston Villa and Derby County (both
English Championship Teams) saw a total number of 76,588 fans in attendance at the Villa Park on the 2nd
of March 1946.
7. SUNDERLAND
Another present day Championship Team;
Sunderland recorded an attendance of 75,118
spectators in their FA Cup replay match against Derby County on the 8th
of March, 1933 at Roker Park.
8. CHARLTON ATHLETIC
On the 12th of
February, 1938, 75,031
spectators trooped into The Valley;
home of Charlton Athletic in their
FA Cup match against Aston Villa.
9. ARSENAL
During the 1998/1999 season, Arsenal were permitted to play all their
home games of the UEFA Champions League Match at Wembley. And in match against
French side RC Lens in a group stage game played on the 25th of
November, 1998, a record high of 73,707 spectators were in attendance in the
London Stadium.
10. SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY
In
an FA Cup match played between Sheffield Wednesday and Manchester City on the
17th of February, 1934, a total number of 72,841 was recorded as the
attendance for that match.
It should be noted that, attendances have gone down since
the introduction of the all-seater
stadia used to replace records set at the terraced grounds which was used back then to calculate the
attendance of a match.
