Mourinho blasts England FA for not protecting Rooney following "drinking" scandal

Mourinho slams England for failing to 'protect' Rooney

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has slammed England management for failing to "take care" of Wayne Rooney on international duty.

The striker hit the headlines after being photographed in an inebriated state in the early hours of the morning in the England team hotel following a wedding.

Rooney later apologised for his behaviour but Mourinho is far from happy with the way in which the incident played out.

“The player goes to the national team, he belongs to the national team and when, as I learnt since I was a kid, if someone lends me something I have to take even better care [of it] than if it was mine,” he fired to reporters.

“Since school, you know. Your friend lends you a pencil, you have to take care of the pencil better than if it was your pencil.”

While averting some of the blame from interim Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate, Mourinho nevertheless urged him to take better care of his players.

He continued: “So I think when one day if I become a national team manager, I will try – try, and I am not saying that I will be successful on that and I am not being critical with Gary or anyone, and I get the occasion to wish Gary the best of luck – but I think you have to build something to protect what is not yours, what someone lends you.

The United boss concluded, on a rather mysterious note: “If you go one by one, to see where these 23 [England] players were, some of them were in worse places than the hotel bar.”

The Red Devils take on Arsenal on Saturday in a clash key to their title aspirations, with defeat threatening to leave the hosts more than 10 points off the summit should other results go against them.
